Is this email verifier free?

Yes. A single check needs no account. Sign up free for bulk lists, history and an API.

Does it send an email to the address?

No. It checks DNS and, where the receiving server allows it, asks whether it would accept mail. No message is delivered.

What does Unknown mean?

The checks could not reach a confident conclusion, usually because the receiving server would not answer. Unknown is reported as a real result and never folded into invalid.
